Vault Beach: A Hidden Gem on Cornwall’s South Coast

For those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty, Vault Beach—also known as Bow Beach—is a stunning stretch of coastline on Cornwall’s south coast, near Gorran Haven. This wide, unspoiled beach is primarily shingle, with a touch of golden sand revealed at low tide. Facing southeast onto the English Channel, it offers breathtaking views and an atmosphere of peaceful seclusion.

Vault Beach lies between Cadythew Rocks to the north and the rugged Dodman Point to the south. Historically, the beach earned its name due to shipwrecks in the age of sail; sailors who mistook Dodman for Land's End often met tragic ends, and their vessels and cargo would wash ashore on this stretch of coastline.

What to Expect

Vault Beach is a haven for those who love nature and a quiet day by the sea. While there are no facilities directly on the beach, its natural beauty more than makes up for the lack of amenities. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the South West Coast Path to Dodman Point, where the views are truly spectacular.

The southern end of Vault Beach is known for its popularity among naturists, offering a clothing-optional section for those who prefer a more natural experience.

Things to note:

Toilets: There are no toilet facilities at Vault Beach, but public toilets are available in Gorran Haven.
Dogs: Dog lovers will be pleased to know that dogs are welcome on Vault Beach year-round.
Steep Access: The footpaths leading to the beach can be steep, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
